5.0 out of 5 stars Old National #7 forever!, July 12, 2010
By
This review is from: Presto 09907 Pressure Canner Sealing Ring/Automatic Air Vent Pack (Kitchen)
The old National No. 7 canners last forever. This ring and the pressure relief valve are all that is needed every few years to keep them going. When you get the ring, oil it well with vegetable oil and do not be concerned that it seems too long at first. The repeated heating of the system causes the seal to shrink a bit. If it starts to not seal quite as well, take it out, oil it again and put it back in with the other side up.

My 88 yr old mother has this very old 7 qt presto pressure cooker (it's over 60 years old). She needed another sealing ring, so I found the 1-800 number of the manufacturer and she called. After she explained what she needed they said to get the part 09907.

After I had read the previous review, I was worried about ordering this part. We were desperate and I ordered it any way. I must warn that the lid must be free of any previous ring, as they dry out and really stick.

At first it seemed too big, but after some effort (scraping the lid once again, applying some spray oil) we wrangled that sealing ring into the lid. Our hands were sore, but it did fit. We used the pressure cooker immediately after and it held!!

I can see if someone would give up but these 2 old ladies were too stubborn to give up!!

This purchase saved us from having to buy a new pressure cooker. My Mom gave me her pressure cooker a couple of years ago, but the gasket was worn out and wouldn't seal. My daughter-in-law has canned several times with it, since we purchased the new gasket, with great success.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yes! This cooker reaches 15psi....Many do not!, November 3, 2010
This review is from: Nesco PC6-25P 6-Quart Electric Programmable Pressure Cooker, Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
11-03-10 - Not all electric pressure cookers are created equal!

Before purchasing this item, I researched several models. Being that most recipes are written for pressure cookers reaching 15 psi, the pressue level the cooker could attain was critical. I contacted Nesco's customer service (1-800-288-4545) to MAKE SURE this model reaches 15psi. On the low side, they advised the cooker reaches 5 psi (for veggies, custards, etc).

During my research, it was evident the disappointment people showed in other models was likely due to their cooker only coming up to 9 to 11psi on the high side, creating a MAJOR problem with food being undercooked and requiring more time. Thankfully, recipes written for a stovetop model should do great in this cooker without having to fiddle with and refigure cooking times because of insufficient pressure.

Another thing I really like about this cooker is the fact it doesn't have "pre-set programs" you can't override. I may... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Nesco is a Keeper!, February 13, 2011

This review is from: Nesco PC6-25P 6-Quart Electric Programmable Pressure Cooker, Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
I agree with the very thorough and very positive reviews above. So I won't re-plow the same ground that they did. However, I will just add a few additional thoughts that may be helpful. I have 3 pressure cookers, 2 Kuhn Ricon stovetop models in different sizes and this Nesco. They all have their advantages and disadvantages and I use them all. The Nesco is not the best suited for some applications (like making very large batches of soup) BUT the Nesco has three big advantages that the MUCH more expensive Kuhn Ricons don't have.

1. The cooking pot has a non-stick surface.

2. Unlike a stovetop cooker, you do not need to stay in the kitchen to monitor it. (Great time saver for busy folks who are multi-tasking)

3. As stated in the product description, it has an automatic warming feature so if your cooking cycle ends and you are not there to turn it off, it will just keep it warm for you.

I have used mine for over a year and I love it... Read more

Thank you so much for underpromising and over-delivering! We received this product well in advance of the anticipated deliver date (and before X-Mas!). This pressure cooker is amazing! The only suggestion is that it be made available with a basket instead of a rack. The rack allows vegetables to fall through. We are using a basket from our 'old' pressure cooker and it does great! My wife has used pressure cookers for over 20 years and is extremely satisfied with the quality of the cooked food and programming options (especially the warming feature). I am able to use this cooker as well! It's that easy...thank you Nesco. We fully recommend this pressure cooker. As mentioned, please consider marketing it with a basket instead of a rack.

Amazon.com Review

Pressure cookers have experienced renewed popularity over the last several years because cooks have rediscovered what some cooks (particularly grandmas) have known for a long time--they're really fast. And it's easy to cook healthfully with pressure cookers, since the food retains so much more of its nutrients and flavor. Presto's 8-quart pressure cooker is a multi-purpose pot that can stand in as a conventional soup pot as well as perform the kitchen magic that pressure cookers are famous for. Chicken Cacciatore cooks in 8 minutes! And it's big enough for home canning, too. (The USDA recommends pressure canning as the only safe method for low-acid foods such as vegetables, meats, and poultry.) This durable, polished-aluminum pressure cooker is an economical addition to any well-rounded set of kitchen tools.

The heavy-duty lid locks down during cooking; an inner sealing ring keeps the steam in. In addition to a pop-up pressure indicator and a simple steam release mechanism, there is an overpressure plug that will let off steam if it builds up excessively. This pressure cooker is useful for weeknight dinners or for any meal that needs to come together quickly. An accompanying booklet contains more than 65 recipes, ranging from basic soup stocks to stews and pot roast--even desserts like Oatmeal-Apple Crisp! Tenderize lean cuts of beef or pork; or cook chicken, fish, or vegetables faster than you can in a microwave, and without losing moisture.

Nonabrasive cleansers are best for cleaning this polished aluminum pressure cooker, though occasional use of a fine metal polish will help the exterior keep its shine. The Presto 8-quart aluminum pressure cooker is fully immersible; in addition, the sealing ring should be removed after each use to allow cleaning of the inside rim of the lid. The vent pipe is simple to keep clean with a small brush or pipe cleaner, and both the air vent/cover lock and the overpressure plug are removable. The pressure cooker measures 11-1/2 inches in diameter (17 inches including handles) and 9 inches tall (including lid). Presto guarantees this pressure cooker with an extended 12-year warranty. A detailed instruction and recipe booklet is included; special safety issues that pertain to pressure cookers are clearly explained. --Garland Withers

5.0 out of 5 stars Comfort foods in a short amount of time!, November 18, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Presto 8-Quart Aluminum Pressure Cooker (Kitchen)
I bought this pressure-cooker three years ago on the recommendation of another person who has used hers for ten years. This pot cooks tomato sauce that tastes as if it were cooked on the stovetop all day, and makes stews in a third of the time. I LOVE this appliance for homey winter comfort foods! It's not scary to use and very easy to clean up. I also recommend buying Lorna Sass's pressure-cooking books for really tasty recipes that are easy to prepare.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cans Five Pints, September 15, 2007

Does not can quart jars, only pints. This model allowed me to try out canning at a low entry cost. Have successfully canned cabbage and sausage, tomato sauce, tomatoes, garbanzo beans, and apple butter in this interesting device. Also have cooked whole chickens and other foods. Canning meats requires an hour under pressure, and the Presto takes it all in stride. Being a pressure cooker/canning novice, it was a little unnerving getting it hot enough to get that top valve rocking. Apparently idiot proof, the cooker does not blow up, is easy to use and clean. Just turn down the burner to medium once the valve starts rocking. The aluminum does discolor inside during some pressure cooking and canning, although putting a little vinegar in the water keeps this to a minimum. I have found that five pints is perfectly adequate for canning projects so far. For example, six pounds of homegrown apples turned into 5.5 pints of apple butter. And it's not like you can't load it up again. At first I... Read more

I purchased a bunch of canning gear and as a result was entitled to an additional promotional claim, so I threw this pressure cooker in with it. What a great deal. I was impressed with the solid construction of this cooker, easy to use, nice features. Presto makes a newer one without the handle, but personally I think the handle is far more useful, especially for browning meat prior to pressure cooking, and the new one is priced at twice this one. I just made a batch of rice pudding in this thing, works great. I am looking forward to long years of service with this thing.
